Hodor – Hold The Door!!

The season 6 episode 5 came as a shock to me! And believe me when I say that I cried at the end of the episode. Yes, it was that devastating ūüôĀ¬†. We all know what I’m talking about. HODOR HODOR…

There have been a few mysteries that Game of Thrones had maintained from the very first season. The first was: Who is Jon Snow’s mother?, but that wasn’t a big curiosity cause we all knew that Ned Stark was going to tell him her name when he would come back from King’s Landing. Well ?!.. Things happened that we didn’t expect. Another question that I had was why does this big guy not speak(For the first 3 episodes)? Followed by why does this guy speak only the word Hodor?

Well the mystery has been solved, but many fans if asked today would have preferred being indifferent about that fact. We now know what Hodor meant but that secret was revealed with a big dagger being stabbed deep into my heart( and many others, I believe).

Anways, I’m dedicating this post to Hodor and together we’ll have a look at his life.

Hodor

HODOR wouldn’t have been this important of a character if it wasn’t for Jamie Lannister who at the end of the first episode pushed Bran Stark down a tower. Yes, that was the event that led to HODOR becoming such an important character. He was a fan favorite the moment people laid their eyes on him and why wouldn’t he be,¬†Kristian Nairn who plays Hodor is pretty large, yet even after that he played a character who was possibly the most grounded character in the whole Game Of Thrones universe.

Hodor was the most grounded, realistic and lovable character on GOT

Hodor possibly had the blood of a Giant in him as Osha pointed out in season 2. He was possibly the only character in the show that was actually scared of violence. Just think of it, Bran was the second youngest on the show and in the very first episode he saw a man being beheaded. That was pretty daring for a child of that age. Yet, Hodor would try to stay away from violence,he was scared of lightning and fire etc. etc. …

Bran had lost his legs, he was told that he would never be able to walk. Tyrion Lannister drew a sledge for him that Hodor could easily pull and carry Bran around in. Mind you, Hodor was the one who had burst into Bran’s room with that sledge all happy and jovial. He never considered Bran as a liability. He was loyal to the Starks. I was pretty sure that if it came to it, Hodor would take an arrow or two for Bran at some point. Hodor is the one that saves Bran, who was then the eldest legitimate Stark alive. Osha killed a person while they escaped from Theon’s grasp.

In season 3, when Bran, Jojen and company were hiding and there was a storm it was Hodor that was the most afraid. As I mentioned earlier, Hodor was afraid of lightning, Bran tried to console him but was not able to do it until he warged into Hodor.¬†Even when they met Samuel Tarly and Gilly, and after knowing their plans, when Sam offered the Obsidian blades that he had found, Hodor was unwilling to accept them at first. This just showed his nature. When at Craster’s keep, Bran wargs into Hodor’s body and snaps some random guy’s neck. When Hodor regains his conscience, he is very visibly distraught.

Now, stay with me and look at this from Hodor’s point of view. He was a person who was completely against violence and yet Bran made him kill someone. Even after this fact, he was loyal to Bran. He was crippled by those mutineers who stabbed Hodor for pleasure. Yet, he carried Bran away from them when it was needed.

Now coming to Season 6 Episode 5 which was very aptly named “The Door”. At some time in the last 10 minutes, Summer is killed, followed by the tree-woman (Honestly I don’t remember her name and didn’t care much of her) but what came next was devastating. The story behind Hodor was revealed. Even in his last minutes, his last seconds and up until he took his last breath, Hodor remained a loyal companion to Bran. Bran warged into the past where he heard Meera’s voice telling him to warg into Hodor and that’s when Hodor or Wyllis had that fit that left him mentally disabled for life. All he heard at that time was “Hold The Door” and that is exactly what he did, *long pause* till his last breath.

Just think about it, not only did Hodor help the Starks when they were in crisis, he had been helping them since the day he had that fit. The word “destiny” comes my to mind. In the world of Game of Thornes, there are many premonitions, legends and folklore but what about destiny. It was HODOR who was destined to save Bran from a moment when Bran didn’t even exist. The only thing that I now wish is that his death doesn’t go in vain, his sacrifice doesn’t equal to nothing.

This post is written in the memory of Hodor.
